A Dynamic Duo: Social Connection and Physical Therapy

Relationships play a crucial role in healing. Two studies in particular, demonstrate how social support enhances musculoskeletal injury recovery.

The first study examined family structure and social support in recovery after a car accident. Those relationships served as a coping resource promoting physical health and decreasing persistent pain. Additionally, those support networks helped patients keep their jobs, decrease their days off, and got them back to work sooner.

In a similar study, patients who experienced improved and successful healing described their social and family support as a vital factor. Many also reported strengthened relationships after having gone through the recovery together.

These studies underscore the importance of social connections and relationships in the healing process. Engaging with family members, friends, and healthcare providers is important. Your networks will bring you emotional encouragement and practical assistance. They will also motivate you to keep your priorities straight.

So reach out to your people! Ask for an accountability buddy or check-in on those loved ones who are working through an injury. Your support may help them through their pain!
